Self, Observed at NCMA

Tuesday, October 4, 2011

My triptych, "Triple Silhouette" (Oil paint on canvas over panel, 48” x 88”, 2007) is part of a juried exhibition at the North Carolina Museum of Art called Self, Observed.

Self, Observed coincides with the Rembrandt in America exhibition running from October 30, 2011 through January 31, 2012. The exhibition celebrates the exploration of identity that occupied Rembrandt van Rijn throughout his life. All works are published through the NCMA blog and will be featured in an Image Slam during the exhibition.

Students in Curatorial Projects at UNC, Chapel Hill, under the supervision of Professor Elin O’Hara Slavick and the Museum, selected 43 artists from over 160 submissions. Jurors considered how entries illustrate the autobiographical exploration of self-identity, through self-portraiture and ask questions such as: “Would Rembrandt like this?” “What does this say about the person represented?” “Does the artist push the medium?” “Can the public relate to the piece?” The works of art that were selected for Self, Observed, were chosen because they represent an exciting diversity of style, media, age, conceptual intent, and rendering that complement the self-analysis and intensity of Rembrandt’s portraiture.

On Friday, November 18, there will be a reception to honor the artists accepted in the Self, Observed exhibition. While the event will not be open to the public, each participating artist will be able to invite family members, friends, and professors. During the event, guests will enjoy a reception and free admission to the Rembrandt in America exhibition.
