Shopping Excursion

We stopped off at the local open air market in Swakopmund where people were selling their handcrafts. Most of the items are from the northern part of Namibia and sent to the town with family members to sell to a wider audience of tourists. Needless to say we bought so many lovely pieces that we filled a whole other suitcase! Batiked fabrics, wall pieces created with woven coconut fibers and hand stitched embellishment, ebony wood carved figures, rosewood bowls, jewelry made from bone and horn...and the stylized, primitive hand carved masks that each tribe creates to represent their individual cultures through. I bought five and look forward to sharing these with future students when it comes time to teach lessons on African masks.
