Today we rounded out the week of Kids College at Cape Fear Community College by finishing our visual journals. Yesterday we painted the sewn fabric covers and let them dry over night. Today we were able to continue our second and third coats of paint. We learned about a painting technique called scumbling, the application of a fine layer of paint with a very dry brush. It is sometimes described as a glaze effect, but rather than the pigments being dispersed in a transparent medium, scumbling creates a fine mesh of opaque pigment. The wrinkles that were in the fabric worked to our advantage as the second layer brought out all the interesting textures. We also talked about collage and drew inspiration from North Carolina artist Romare Bearden. Then we made our own collages for our books. We also took our newly made chalks and went outside to find other interesting textures and made chalk rubbings. Then we put it all together in our books and bound them like real bookmakers.
